KNIGHT riders from Windsor Castle rolled in to Slough

25.06.2009

KNIGHT riders from Windsor Castle rolled in to Slough for a charity go-karting challenge with hopes of putting the skids under the younger generation.

THE four high ranking officers of the Military Knights of Windsor were determined to rev up the atmosphere at the Absolute Karting track in Leigh Road and strike a blow for elderly drivers across the borough.

The one hour endurance race featured teams from Slough businesses, including SEGRO, Kinnarps, Timberland and All Signs, who took to the grid as part of an Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East appeal to help promote positive perceptions of ageing.

ACSABE chief executive Tracey Morgan, who captained one of the two Age Concern teams, said: “Inviting the Military Knights with an average age of 73 to take part was our way of demonstrating that age doesn’t have to mean stuffy and the older generation still has a great deal to offer the wider community. We just didn’t expect them to be quite so competitive.”

Fundraising took a back seat, however, as the chequered flag was waved to signal the end of the gruelling race in which the All Signs team were crowned champions, closely followed by Kinnarps in second place.

Although the veteran team finished further down the leader board they won plenty of admirers with a fearless performance behind the wheel.

Colonel Bruce Watson, said: “It was great fun and nice to be invited along. The last time I was in a go-kart was in 1963 which was basically a lawnmower engine wielded to metal chassis, times have certainly changed.”
