Questions
I’m not a technical person, how difficult will it be to set up my website?
You don’t need any technical knowledge. The software for creating and maintaining your website has been designed with a clear, straightforward interface.
Is there a minimum period for this service? Can I move my website to some free webspace afterwards?
If you want to take up this service, you must subscribe for at least 12 months. After this you will be free to cancel your agreement. However you will no longer be able to update your site using this Community Website service and the website you built through this service will be no longer be live.
I already have a web address (domain name), can I use it for this service?
Yes.
I dont have a web address (domain name) do I need one?
You will need to register a domain name with a company like Net Benefit This will cost you approximately £20 for two years.
I have already been offered some free webspace. Can I get a discount?
Unfortunately not. The webspace is an integral part of the service to ensure that your website is always accessible. Although great for personal homepages, free webspace often has limitations which make it unsuitable for business and charity use. For example:
- if your site becomes popular it may be taken down for periods of time.
- if problems arise, you won’t be able to demand that it’s fixed within a specified timeframe as you are unlikely to have a service agreement
- many ‘free’ hosting offers actually contain annoying pop-ups and banner ads that are intrusively placed over your website.
- you may not get technical support if you are having problems accessing your webspace.
- Storage space is often limited – as your site grows, you have to start deleting pages or pay extra for more space.
I’ve heard people mention ‘accessibility’ when talking about websites, what does this mean?
Accessibility is now a legal requirement. Put simply it means ensuring that the full range of users can access your site. The templates that you will be using to build your site meet an internationally recognised standard.
I’ve heard of sites being ‘hacked’ How secure will my website be?
Your website will be hosted on a secure server behind a ‘firewall’, which will be monitored for any signs of attack and backed-up everyday. In the unlikely event that your site goes down it can be restored in a matter of minutes.
How can I measure the success of my website? Do you provide statistics?
Comprehensive statistics, including the number of visitors, pages viewed, etc are accessible via the service.
What if I get stuck or have a problem, do you provide support?
There will be a dedicated telephone number and email address for all queries.
